AN ANALYSIS OF POLITENESS STRATEGIES USED IN EFL CLASSROOM INTERACTION AT 11TH GRADES OF SMA NEGERI 1 TITEHENA IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2024/2025

This study addresses two main questions: first, what are the politeness strategies used by teachers in classroom interaction. Second, what approach do teachers use to communicate politely in EFL classrooms. The purpose of this study was to find out the politeness strategies used by teachers and to find out the approach used by teachers in grade eleven in implementing the politeness strategies. Qualitative methods were applied in this study. Data collection was conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Titehena in February 2025, specifically focusing on teachers who teach in grade eleven. The results of the study showed that politeness strategies were indeed used by teachers in classroom interaction. Four strategies were used in classroom interaction: bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record strategies. Data collected from teachers revealed 59 politeness strategy utterances: 25 positive politeness utterances and 22 negative politeness utterances, 9 bald on record utterances, and the least was off-record 3 utterances. Two approaches were found using the pragmatic concept, namely the linguistic approach and the pedagogical approach.
