Abstrak

This study examines the use of Facebook status updates in a sociolinguistic context for young adults, focusing on communicative functions and the influence of social factors. This study used a qualitative descriptive method; data were collected from 25 young adults through  observation,  content analysis, and questionnaires. The results identified 11 communicative functions, with seven being the most frequent: everyday life, reporting moods, initiating discussions, about self/opinions, conveying personal information, humor, and quotations. These findings indicate that Facebook serves not only for information sharing but also as a tool for identity construction, emotional expression, and social bonding. Furthermore, social factors such as breadth, depth, positivity, and authenticity significantly influence status-updating behavior. Self-presentation strategies—including the real, ideal, and false self—show a tendency toward authenticity while balancing privacy and social risks. Overall, Facebook status updates are vital communication tools where young adults employ self-presentation strategies to balance honesty and caution in the cyber public sphere. The choice of language style (natural, casual, or formal) is heavily influenced by the user's perceived comfort and communicative goals.
